Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned the National Assembly Christian Chapel on Sunday.

Accompanied by prominent figures including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara, she described the sanctuary as a powerful reminder of the divine accountability that accompanies public service.

Mrs Tinubu emphasised that the essence of the Chapel extends beyond its physical structure, serving as a beacon for ethical leadership and national transformation.

“While we legislate for the people, we ultimately remain accountable to God,” she remarked.

“As we dedicate this Chapel today, may it inspire humility in leadership, courage in decision-making, and compassion in service.”

She further expressed her conviction that the National Assembly is now uniquely positioned to “pray Nigeria into greatness,” seeking a future where the country flourishes through collective worship and intercession.

The ceremony featured poignant contributions from elder statesmen and legislative veterans.

Gowon urged lawmakers to prioritise the country’s best interests, noting that divine law is rooted in love for God and neighbour.

He stressed that this spirit of love is essential to ensuring the unity and continuity of the Nigerian nation.

Dogara, who initiated the Chapel project during the 8th Assembly, described the facility as a centre for true repentance and unity.

He argued that national healing and progress are inextricably linked to spiritual alignment, urging the Chapel to remain a space focused on peace and reconciliation.

Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio used the occasion to highlight the leadership qualities of President Bola Tinubu.

He urged Nigerians to look beyond religious labels and focus on the character and reformist agenda of those in power.

“While men legislate for a season, God legislates for eternity,” Akpabio noted. “Lawmaking must be guided by conscience, anchored in righteousness, and established through prayers.”

He maintained that the true strength of a nation lies in its recognition of a higher power and the integrity of its institutions.

The dedication ceremony was a multi-denominational event attended by serving and former members of the National Assembly, Christian and non-Christian observers and high-ranking government officials and religious leaders.

The event concluded with specialised prayer sessions for the peace of the nation, the success of the President’s administration, and the wisdom of the legislative arm.

The commissioning stands as a significant milestone in the administration’s efforts to integrate moral values with the rigorous demands of governance.
