Akeredolu’s ex-deputy, Agboola emerges Ondo PDP guber candidate

Agboola Ajayi, the former Deputy Governor of Ondo State, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the November gubernatorial election in the state.

Mr Agboola, who served as deputy governor to the late Rotimi Akeredolu until 2020, was declared the winner by the chairman of the party’s primary election committee and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

In the party primary held on Wednesday, Mr Agboola garnered 264 votes, defeating his closest opponent, former House of Representatives member Kolade Akinjo, who received 157 votes.

Former Secretary-General of the Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, secured 99 votes, Adeolu Akinwumi received 64 votes, Bamidele Akingboye scored 24, John Mafo polled nine, and Bosun Arebuwa had two votes.

Before the commencement of the exercise, Mr Ewhrudjakpo vowed to conduct a free, fair, and credible primary.

Attempt to impeach Mr Agboola during the buildup to the 2020 gubernatorial election was unsuccessful and he later joined the PDP.

He contested the 2020 election under the Zenith Labour Party’s banner after losing the PDP ticket to Eyitayo Jegede but finished third in the poll with 69,127 votes.

Mr Agboola will now compete against the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Aiyedatiwa, a former Deputy Governor of late Akeredolu who later became governor following his principal death won the All Progressive Congress (APC) primary election on Monday.
