Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has been ruled out of action for between “six to nine months” following an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The 24-year-old injured his ACL in Saturday’s FA Cup defeat at Manchester City. A scan has revealed he will need surgery on his knee, and now he’s scheduled to have it next week.

In September, Botman had sustained a knee injury, missing 17 games in the process, and returned in December. This included the final five matches of the Magpies’ Champions League group games.

Newcastle stated it decided not to send Botman for surgery at that time and he regained full fitness through a rehabilitation programme.

The Dutchman has started the majority of Newcastle’s matches since his return. However, he had to be substituted in the 83rd minute of the 2-0 loss to City in their quarter-final tie.

Newcastle added: “Following further assessment, a scan has confirmed that he sustained an injury to his ACL during Saturday’s match and he is expected to return to action within six-to-nine months.”
