In an exhilarating finale at the Stade de France on Friday 9th August 2024, 25-year-old Yemisi Ogunleye made history by winning the gold medal in the women’s shot put event at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a remarkable throw of 20 meters, Ogunleye outshone a strong field of finalists, including New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who took silver, and China’s Song Jiayuan, who claimed bronze.

Who is Yemisi Ogunleye?

Ogunleye was born in Germersheim, Germany and grew up in the village of Bellheim to a German mother and a Yoruba Nigerian father from Omuooke in Ekiti State.

During a post-victory interview, Yemisi proudly celebrated her Nigerian heritage, specifically her Ekiti roots, singing a gospel song in Yoruba. This moment showcased her diverse background and talents, as she is also a gospel singer.

Career Milestone

Ogunleye’s triumph at the Olympics marks a milestone, as she becomes the first German athlete to win the shot put event in 28 years, since the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. Ogunleye’s victory is a testament to her unique cultural blend and exceptional athletic prowess.

Personal Life

Yemisi is also a gospel singer hence the reason the CBS reporter asked if she could sing a song after her victory. She sang beautifully to honour and praise God on the Olympic stage after winning the gold medal in her Shot Put event.
