Despite their best efforts, neither side could grab a decisive goal in regulation time. With extra time scrapped, the stage was set for the drama of penalties.
During the shootout, Al Ahly faltered under pressure, missing two of their spot-kicks. Zamalek, on the other hand, held their nerve, converting crucial penalties to snatch victory.
