Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi will not face formal action from the FA despite displaying religious messages on his kit. The England defender stirred debate after writing “I love Jesus” on his rainbow captain’s armband during a recent match.
The incident occurred during Palace’s clash with Newcastle United, part of the Premier League’s LGBTQ+ inclusion initiative in partnership with Stonewall. Captains are encouraged to wear rainbow armbands, though participation in the campaign is not mandatory.
Ahead of Tuesday’s win against Ipswich Town, the FA had reminded Guehi of its rules prohibiting religious messaging on football kits. However, the 23-year-old displayed another message reading “Jesus loves you,” ignoring the prior warning.

Despite the repeat ‘offense’, the FA decided not to pursue formal disciplinary measures against either Guehi or Crystal Palace. Instead, the association has once again reminded the club of its regulations on kit messaging.
In contrast, Ipswich captain Sam Morsy chose not to wear the rainbow armband in two consecutive games, citing his religious beliefs. The midfielder’s decision was visible during matches against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace but did not draw FA scrutiny.
These incidents have sparked wider discussions on balancing individual beliefs with inclusivity campaigns in football. As debates continue, the FA remains firm on its stance regarding uniform messaging rules.
