FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed sadness over the tragic death of Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo.

The player has tragically died after he collapsed during a Copa Libertadores game on 22 August. He suffered an irregular heartbeat, leading to his sudden collapse on the field of play.

Izquierdo suffered a cardiac arrest following his collapse during Nacional’s game against Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo.

He had been receiving treatment at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo. His condition was initially said to be ‘stable’ However, his situation condition worsened in recent days.

According to the BBC, Infantino stated: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo.

“On behalf of Fifa and the entire footballing community, I would like to express my sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP.”

After the news of the Uruguayan’s death broke, a spokesperson for Sao Paulo stated it was a “sad day for football”.

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez, who is an ex-Uruguayan player said: “Pain, sadness, it is hard to explain. May he rest in peace. I wish a lot of strength for his family and friends.”

It is indeed a dark day in Uruguay football, South American football and the football world at large.
