The Federal Government (FG) has stated that Nigeria’s ability to compete globally, improve public service delivery and achieve sustainable economic growth will depend largely on how effectively it adopts and deploys digital technology.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, made the remarks on Wednesday while declaring open the Digital Transformation Summit 2026 in Abuja.
The event, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone Limited, attracted technology experts, government officials and policymakers to discuss strategies for advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.

Akume, who also chairs the Board of Directors of Galaxy Backbone Limited, said digital technology has become a critical driver of governance, economic development and efficient public service delivery.
He stressed that the future of governance, economic competitiveness and public administration would increasingly depend on the successful adoption of digital solutions.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume emphasised that achieving meaningful digital transformation requires collaboration among all levels of government.
He urged federal, state and local governments to work together to accelerate the implementation of technology-driven initiatives across the country.
Addressing government officials and technology stakeholders, Akume noted that the necessary infrastructure, expertise and partnerships for digital transformation are already in place.
He said what is now required is stronger cooperation, wider adoption of digital tools and a collective commitment to modernising government operations.
The SGF also highlighted the achievements of Galaxy Backbone over the past two decades, describing the organisation as a strategic national asset.
He noted that the agency provides critical ICT infrastructure, cloud services, digital connectivity and cybersecurity support for government institutions nationwide.
He added that the organisation’s expansion plans align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in areas such as transparency, economic growth, inclusion and improved efficiency in governance.
Akume, however, stressed that achieving these objectives would require sustained investment in digital infrastructure, support for local innovation and the strengthening of institutions capable of meeting the needs of millions of Nigerians.

He commended the management and staff of Galaxy Backbone for their contributions over the last 20 years and expressed optimism that the summit would produce recommendations capable of advancing Nigeria’s digital economy and strengthening national development.
