Politics: INEC resumes voter registration August 18

NRTC Weekly reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all is set for the by-elections taking place this Saturday, August 16, 2025, across 16 constituencies in 12 states.

This update was contained in a statement released on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, after the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja.

According to the statement, the polls will be held in two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo States, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo States, as well as nine state constituencies in Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna (two constituencies), Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara States. Court-ordered re-run elections will also be conducted in Enugu South I State Constituency in Enugu State and Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency in Kano State on the same day.

Leading Stories: FG drops criminal charges against Emmanson, eases KWAM 1’s ban

NRTC Weekly learnt that the Federal Government has withdrawn its criminal case against Ms. Comfort Emmanson, accused of misconduct aboard an Ibom Air flight, and has also reduced the flight suspension placed on Fuji music legend, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, made the announcement on Wednesday after consultations with aviation industry stakeholders.

According to Keyamo, the decisions were reached after reviewing the incidents, taking into account appeals from concerned individuals, and noting the remorse shown by those involved.

Ibom Air has agreed to drop its complaint against Ms. Emmanson, who was arrested on August 10 over an in-flight altercation. “When the Police took her statement in the presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct,” the minister said.

Business: Okonjo-Iweala urges Tinubu to bolster social safety nets

NRTC Weekly gathered that The World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Thursday engaged in a discussion with President Bola Tinubu on the state of Nigeria’s economy.

During the discussion at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, she offered her perspective on the ongoing reforms.

Okonjo-Iweala stated that she believed the current economic reforms are heading in the right direction and have led to a degree of stabilisation.

However, she emphasised the critical need for the administration to intensify its focus on building robust social safety nets to cushion the effects of these reforms on the population.

Sports: CHAN 2024: Sudan humble Nigeria 4-0 as Eagles crash out without a fight

NRTC Weekly learnt that Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles were dumped out of the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) after suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday in Zanzibar.

The result followed a 1-0 loss to defending champions Senegal in their opening Group D fixture.

This means the Eagles B are mathematically eliminated regardless of the outcome of their final group match against Congo in Dar es Salaam next week.

It also matches Nigeria’s joint-heaviest defeat in CHAN history – the same margin they suffered against Morocco in the 2018 final.

Entertainment: CHIVIDO2025: Dangote, D’banj, other a-list star guests at Davido, Chioma’s white wedding in Miami

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Afrobeats sensation Davido and his longtime partner, Chioma Rowland, sealed their love in a lavish white wedding ceremony that drew some of the biggest names in entertainment, business, and politics.

The event, held in Miami, was a glittering display of elegance and influence, reflecting the couple’s prominence in both the music scene and Nigerian society.

Among the high-profile attendees were Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Music heavyweights including D’banj, Adekunle Gold, Teni, and Zlatan Ibile also graced the occasion, adding star power to the guest list.

Industry figures such as Cobhams Asuquo, who served as musical director for Davido’s 5IVE Alive tour, and talent manager Ubi Franklin, were also present.

The celebration attracted notable personalities beyond Nigeria’s borders, including Edwina Akufo-Addo, daughter of former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
