UK commends peaceful conduct of Edo governorship election

The British High Commission has described Saturday’s Edo State governorship election as largely peaceful while calling for calm in the aftermath of the results.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the commission praised the people of Edo State for their active participation in the electoral process and highlighted the importance of upholding peace.

“The UK commends the largely peaceful conduct of the elections and the voters of Edo State for their participation,” the statement read.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerged victorious, securing 291,667 votes, ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party came in third with 22,763 votes.

The UK Commission encouraged any parties dissatisfied with the election results to follow the established legal channels to address their concerns. They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other authorities to handle all complaints with fairness and transparency.

“Electoral and legal processes exist to address any challenges or disputes, and we encourage the authorities, including INEC, to examine all concerns transparently and in good faith,” the commission stated.

The UK government also reiterated its commitment to supporting credible elections in Nigeria and assured that it would continue to closely monitor the situation in Edo State.
