Today in the world of sports, names like Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin and Asafa Powell  are a force to reckon with  but we are also have females who are as well making waves.

Speed , tenacity and surefootedness being the watch words when it come to track and field. History has recorded women with these laudable traits and impressive stamina.

Here is a list of the top 10 fastest female athletes in history in no particular order:

  1. GRIFFITH JOYNE

The former sensation athlete who is popularly called Flo-Jo, Grifith Delorez Florence Joyne is regarded as the fastest woman in the world with a record of completing the Olympics finals in Seoul Olympic 1988 in 10:62 seconds.

Apart from setting the unbeatable record of 10:49 seconds, she has won three gold medals and has proven to be an icon in the sporting world.

2. ELAINE THOMPSON

This Jamaican born athlete is another speed icon. With a  record of 10:71 seconds in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She has won her fair share of medals and have set other astonishing time records.

3. SHELLY ANN FRASER

A role model  to many; she has been described as an inspiration to several emerging talents across the globe.

Equally, she has continued to get  better at each game. After an impressive record of finishing the 100 meters 2012 London Olympics in 10:75 seconds, she went all in, in the 2008 Olympics where she won gold.

A three time Olympic medalist, she was the 2011 IAAF  World champion .

5. VERONICA CAMPBELL

6. GAIL DEVERS

She has been described as an American  heart throb had made history with an impeccable record of 10:82 seconds in the 100 meters  at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Till date, most young athletes regard her in high esteem.

10. MARION JONES
