2023/24 EPL: Haaland brace as Manchester City thrash Burnley in season opener

Erling Haaland picked up from where he left last season as he dispatched two goals in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor in the first match of the 2023/24 English Premier League season.

The win didn’t come as a surprise as Burnley manager Vincent Kompany saw his side outplayed by his former club.

Haaland wasted no time in finding the net, scoring four minutes into the match. Rodri met a cross at the far end and headed the ball into the box. Haaland met it and shot well into the net.

City dominated proceedings but were forced to withdraw Kevin De Bruyne who got injured midway through the first half. Former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic replaced the Belgian minutes before City scored the second.

A fantastic through ball released Kyle Walker on the right wing with the England right-back’s cut-back cross met by Julian Alvarez.

Seeing that he was in a difficult spot to shoot at goal, the Argentine teed up Haaland whose first-time left-footed shot flew straight into the net albeit the underside of the crossbar. It was a ferocious shot that left the Burnley goalkeeper completely helpless.

Burnley could hardly muster anything from the game and City added a third in the 75th minute when Rodri drove home. At that point, Burnley fans knew the game was well beyond them.
