Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has asked the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), to release his academic records to anyone seeking them through legitimate and lawful means.

Obi made the call in response to reports of legal action seeking Certified True Copies (CTCs) of his academic credentials, including his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which he said UNN awarded him in 1984.

He said he had no objection to UNN releasing his certificates, admission documents and other official records relating to his studies, provided such requests complied with applicable laws and procedures.

Obi also extended the request to other educational institutions he attended in Nigeria and abroad, asking them to make his records available when approached through legitimate channels.

The former Anambra State governor said public scrutiny was necessary for people seeking public office. Still, he stressed that such scrutiny should be lawful, fair and applied consistently to all political candidates.

He said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his educational background and qualifications, adding that candidates seeking Nigerians’ trust should be prepared to subject themselves to reasonable scrutiny.

Obi also urged other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for public examination.

According to him, transparency over candidates’ records should be viewed as a way of promoting accountability, strengthening public confidence and rebuilding citizens’ trust in political leadership.

His comments followed a suit filed by former Labour Party spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi against UNN over the alleged refusal to release a CTC of Obi’s 1984 degree certificate and other academic records.
