Met Gala 2024: Top picks for the dresscode, ‘Garden of Dreams’

Estimated reading time: 8 minutes

The Met Gala 2024 was hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on May 6, 2024. The theme of this year’s gala was ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ with the dress code ‘Garden of Dreams’. The event also known as the Costume Institute Gala was co-chaired by celebrities like Zendaya, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth alongside Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief.

The Met Gala is a Vogue fundraising event created by Eleanor Lambert. This year’s event had over 400 guests, celebrities, musicians, designers, models, actors, and other influential figures. Each one tried to make a fashion statement to the dress code. Even the red carpet, no, green carpet was decorated to the theme. But who slayed it the most for us? Find out.

1. Zendaya

Zendaya made two bold fashion statements on the Met Gala’s red carpet. But her first outfit speaks more to the dress statement of the event, ‘Garden of Dreams’. This is her sixth time in the Met Gala event and she co-chairs the event this year

Her first dress screams Mother Nature with a subtle touch of Garden of Eden with her wine-themed makeup. The Challengers’ star bodied this Marson Margiela outfit with grace. Her A-shaped dress seems adorned with a grapes-like design at the strap and the hip side stands out with gold pine-shaped flowers.

Zendaya’s first outfit is made from shimmering blue and teal organza material which she perfectly adorned with a fascinator of the same color. The part of the fascinator close to her neck has on it the representation of a hummingbird. With a closer look at the colors of the dress, the green color represents earth and the blue color represents water. Zendaya killed the dress code with this outfit.

2. Teyana Taylor

Ring-a-ring o’ roses, a pocket full of posies. Teyana Taylor looks good in any outfit for her red carpet look at the Met Gala 2024 has no adjective to qualify it yet. It was breath taking. Her crimson red velvet outfit took the embroidered red roses on it as if it bore it, more like, a bed of roses.

The American songwriter and actress debuted her platinum blonde look with this outfit and matching heels. Her nude makeup glam complements her skin and hair giving her a goddess vibe. With the classy high slit that exposes her gold-strapped heels, we can say Teyana ate this look.

3. Nicki Minaj

While yellow can be too flashy and overbearing sometimes, Nicki Minaj’s dress defiles that possibility. Nicki Minaj appeared at the event in a bright yellow short gown with 4D flowers of different colors sticking out of various corners of the dress. The flowers contrasted with the yellow background color in the nicest way possible.

The American rapper styled the outfit with matching yellow bags and shoes. She maintained a nude makeup look and her hair was adorned with flower-shaped accessories. Her look represents a brightly colored garden of flowers. She is one of the few lots that did justice to a flower-themed look.

4. Jonathan Bailey

The Bridgerton star graced the red carpet in a Loewe suit designed. Jonathan Bailey wore a bright pink flower bow tie to the suit .This made Jonathan’s outfit speak to the dress code. The Jonathan Anderson’s styled suit moved from being simple to a dreamy one with the flower placed at the upper left hand side of his trouser’s pocket of the suit.

5. Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle’s dress is described as a ‘sea-worthy couture’. She walked the Met Gala red carpet alongside her husband, Dwayne Wade in a high neck teal and green ombre embedded dress. Gabrielle Union was giving mermaid vibes in her fish tailed outfit. The designer behind Gabrielle Union’s oufit is the indellible Michael Kors.

The Wicked star was dressed in Thom Browne black suit dress. But this crop topped suit was designed with sequin material at the bust area, with a closer look at the outfit, one would notice embroidered bugs, spiders and other insects on the dress. Cynthia in an interview teased that it looks like she ‘ has run into a garden and things have fallen on’ her.

Her dress have rose petals designed all over with the drape of her dress overflowing. She accompainied the look with a bright pink coloured hand bag. We cannot help but notice the blush around her eyes giving her statement look.

7. Ayo Edebiri

The Emmy winner wore a floral themed dress to the Met Gala. She graced the red carpet in a A-shaped white flowered backless, strapless dress. Flowers were embroidered into dress at the lower part of the dress down to the hem of the dress. She graced a simple but elegant look also with the brightly coloured blush on her cheeks.

8. Rachael Smith

The American actress decided to go green with the dresscode. Her dress loooks like she is a garden of vegetable which she wore graciously. The black and green flower embroidered dress matches the red carpet’s asthetics and Rachael embodied the green of nature effortlessly.

9. Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny was one of the co-chairs of Met Gala 2024. The actor is known for making fashion statements without overdoing it. He graced the red carpet with a Maison Margiela black suit holding a bouquet of black roses- the black roses just made his outfit a match to the dresscode. Bad Bunny really killed his outfit ‘with a playful little hat, hoofed Tabi shoes, tiny sunglasses’.

The Met Gala 2024 was graced by a lot of stunning designs on the red carpet. Only that, the carpet was green adorned with green flowers. It goes well with the dress code chosen. The dress code, Garden of Dreams is not a new concept . Dior had used it for their advertised campain which featured Anya Taylor- Joy in 2023. It is important that guests stick to the dress code of events they attend.

This is our pick for guests who stuck to the dresscode. There are a lot more we want to bring to your reading but let us close the list here. Check out the rest on Met Gala social media pages and stay fashion trendy because one day you might just receive an invite.

NRTC WEEKLY: Top 5 trending stories across the country this week

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

It’s another edition of NRTC WEEKLY Roundup —in this week’s edition, we are focusing on five trending stories across the country.

As usual, the stories will cut across the top five beats in our media organization, NRTC [your one-stop hub for rich and reliable content covering entertainment, sports, politics, metro, and leading stories].

As we all know, a day can’t pass without trending stories and we have tracked many of them for you this week. Why not scroll down and treat yourself?

Entertainment: Wizkid and Davido, sports: UEFA Champion League, business: Naira to Dollar—leading stories: Fuel scarcity, education: JAMB are issues to discuss on NRTC WEEKLY.

Entertainment: Wizkid and Davido

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the internet once again erupted with excitement as Afrobeats giants Wizkid and Davido reignited their long-standing feud on social media.

Davido X Wizkid

This latest clash, which ensued after Wizkid shared a video of Davido on his knees begging, has left Nigerian music fans divided, eliciting strong reactions from both sides.

Wizkid shared the controversial video of Davido, which surfaced in April, instructing his fans who were clamoring for new songs to plead with him like Davido did in the video.

Many fans have firmly entrenched themselves in their respective camps, passionately defending their favorite artist as part of ‘Wizkid FC’ and the ‘30BG’. Social media platforms are flooded with memes, tweets, and commentary, often taking sides and throwing shade at the opposing artiste.

NRTC WEEKLY learned that many Nigerians expressed disappointment at the continued feud, feeling it hinders collaboration and growth within the Afrobeats scene, currently experiencing global success.

As the feud persists, some Nigerians are urging the artists to set aside their differences and focus on making music, a sentiment, NRTC WEEKLY confirmed.

A cynical perspective suggests the feud might be a publicity stunt, with some fans even suggesting it’s merely ‘all content’ to keep them engaged.

Wizkid and Davido’s feud remains a hot topic in Nigeria. While some fans revel in the rivalry, others yearn for a more collaborative spirit within Afrobeats. Only time will tell how this saga unfolds, but one thing’s for sure – Nigerians are watching.

Sports: UEFA Champions League

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the race for the Champions League title is intensifying, making it difficult to predict which team—Bayern, Real Madrid, PSG, or Dortmund—will lift the trophy.

UEFA Champions League

The German powerhouse, known for its ruthless efficiency and tactical mastery, is a seasoned champion. Despite a shaky performance after the draw against Real Madrid, Bayern should not be underestimated.

On the other hand, Real Madrid has a knack for producing magic in the Champions League, with their experience and never-say-die attitude making them a formidable opponent, especially with Benzema in top form.

PSG boasts some of the world’s most explosive attacking talent, such as Mbappe, making them a nightmare for any defense. However, their defensive frailties have been exposed, raising doubts about their ability to withstand pressure.

Meanwhile, Dortmund’s young guns are playing exciting, attacking football, as evidenced by their surprising group-stage victory over PSG. However, their ability to handle the pressure of facing more experienced teams on the big stage remains uncertain.

The question of who will emerge victorious continues to dominate internet discussions, but it remains too close to call. Each team possesses strengths and weaknesses, and the outcome ultimately depends on who performs on the day, minimizes errors, and seizes opportunities.

Business: Naira to Dollar

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the recent devaluation of the Naira has sent shockwaves through the nation’s vibrant online community.

Naira and Dollar

Many Nigerians who used the Naira for cross-border transactions and online purchases now find themselves with less purchasing power, leading to frustration, especially for those who rely on it for income generation.

NRTC WEEKLY confirmed that some users express a loss of trust in its value, while its devaluation raises questions about the platform’s stability and long-term viability, leading some to consider switching to alternative platforms.

READ ALSO

However, some Nigerians are demanding clear communication on the reasons behind the devaluation and the platform’s plans for stabilization.

The devaluation of the Naira has cast a shadow over the digital currency landscape in Nigeria, NRTC WEEKLY confirmed.

Leading stories: Fuel scarcity

Once again, Nigerians are engulfed in waves of agony as the nation grapples with a double blow: fuel scarcity and soaring prices. What began as a minor inconvenience has now escalated into a full-blown nightmare for many citizens.

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the days of easily accessing gas stations are long gone. Motorists are now confronted with interminable, frustrating queues stretching for miles, enduring hours under the scorching sun, only to discover dry pumps at the end.

This scarcity has given rise to a flourishing black market, where fuel is available but at exorbitant prices, further burdening the finances of ordinary Nigerians.

The fuel crisis has led to a drastic surge in public transportation costs. Commuters are now faced with the distressing dilemma of either paying inflated fares or enduring lengthy journeys on unreliable alternative modes of transportation, NRTC WEEKLY confirmed.

Businesses reliant on fuel for transportation and logistics are bearing the brunt of the crisis. Deliveries are being delayed, and the prices of goods are escalating, adding more strain on consumers.

Fuel scarcity disrupts the daily lives of Nigerians, causing businesses to struggle, turning commutes into ordeals, and pushing the cost of living even higher. The hope remains for a swift resolution, but until then, Nigerians endure the agony of this unfortunate situation.

Education: JAMB

NRTC WEEKLY learned that disappointment pervades Nigeria as news of a substantial failure rate in this year’s JAMB examinations circulates. While the exact figures are disputed, reports indicate a significant number of students did not meet expectations, leading to widespread outrage and blame.

JAMB

Online, students express frustration, with some attributing the poor performance to inadequate preparation, while others cite distractions or difficulties with the computer-based testing format. Parents share these concerns, adding worries about the financial strain of exam retakes.

Educators face criticism as well. Some question the inflexibility of the curriculum, while others highlight the obstacles posed by the pandemic’s disruption to learning. The debate over who bears responsibility for this educational setback rages on.

Yet, amid the disappointment, some Nigerians advocate for a comprehensive review of the education system. Social media conversations encourage strategic preparation and explore alternative pathways to higher education.

One thing is certain: the JAMB results have sparked a national dialogue about Nigeria’s education system. Whether this leads to tangible solutions remains uncertain, but there is hope that lessons will be learned to prevent a recurrence of this year’s mass failure.

Stay tuned for the next episode of NRTC WEEKLY as we delve into the latest happenings in Nigeria.

Leading stories: EFCC and Yahaya Bello

Nigerians are voicing concerns following the Kogi State High Court’s directive in Lokoja, ordering the chairperson of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, to appear before it on May 13 to justify why he should not face imprisonment for allegedly defying its order.

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Judge I.A. Jamil issued the order in response to a suit marked HCL/68M/2024, filed by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

Bello’s application, seeking contempt charges against the EFCC chair, is seen as a desperate attempt to halt his arraignment and trial on N80 billion money laundering charges brought against him following his tenure as governor.

The EFCC recently filed a case against the former Kogi Governor for alleged misappropriation of $720,000, purportedly paid in advance as fees for his five children from the Kogi State Government’s funds. These children are reportedly in Grades 2 to 8 at their school.

Many Nigerians express hope that Jnr Pope’s demise will prompt meaningful change. They advocate for a thorough revamp of safety regulations and production standards within Nollywood to avert similar tragedies in the future.

Sports: EPL title race

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the Premier League title race has traditionally been dominated by heavyweight clubs with deep pockets and extensive trophy cabinets. However, this season, with other teams triumphing in European competitions, football enthusiasts across England are witnessing a refreshing change.

Premier League Flag

Manchester City, the reigning champions three times over, suffered elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid. Liverpool’s aspirations in Europe were dashed in the Europa League, while Arsenal’s resurgence fell short against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The absence of European distractions has shifted all attention to the domestic league. Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, separated by just a single point at the summit, are engaged in an enthralling battle for Premier League supremacy.

For fans, this unexpected twist has reignited their passion for the Premier League, with every fixture now carrying immense significance, devoid of any European hangover.

This season, NRTC WEEKLY highlighted isn’t solely about the usual contenders. The absence of European commitments has created an opportunity for other teams to challenge for a top-four finish or even secure a spot in the Champions League.
