Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Tuesday rallied traditional rulers from the South South region to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, declaring that the President’s second term was ‘non-negotiable.’
Okpebholo made the appeal while receiving members of the South South Monarchs Forum at the Government House in Benin City.
He emphasised the critical role of traditional rulers in national development, particularly in tackling insecurity and promoting unity.
“The South South must speak with one voice because we have our son as President. We must support him to complete his tenure in 2027,” the governor stated.

He praised Tinubu’s economic and tax reforms, highlighting increased federal allocations to states and renewed investment in developmental projects.
Okpebholo also stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government and traditional institutions in curbing insecurity.
“Traditional rulers are close to the grassroots and are vital to the success of our efforts. They understand local dynamics and can help expose bad elements. Information is key in the fight against insecurity,” he said.
The governor pledged to engage other southern governors to sustain and elevate respect for traditional institutions.
He further acknowledged the country’s current challenges but assured that the Tinubu administration was taking steps in the right direction.
Responding on behalf of the Forum, the Vice Chairman, HRM Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (rtd), the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom in Delta State, commended Governor Okpebholo for his leadership and respect for traditional rulers.
He congratulated the governor on his election and tribunal victory, describing them as significant for the people of Edo State.
“We salute your courage in addressing insecurity and appreciate your generosity towards traditional institutions. Your decision to restore the rights and privileges of the Oba of Benin and to reverse attempts to divide the kingdom is commendable,” Mujakperuo said.
He pledged the Forum’s support for the governor’s administration, lauding his capacity to lead the state on the path of growth and development.
