2027: Opposition coalition urges Atiku, Obi, others to fully join ADC

A coalition of Nigerian opposition figures and groups has resolved to consolidate its power under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has directed all members to resign from their current political parties and formally join the party.

This directive was part of the resolutions reached during a closed-door meeting held yesterday, convened by the interim National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark.

The coalition also announced the suspension of its earlier attempt to register a new platform, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, all attendees agreed to support the winner of the party’s presidential primary election for the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his attendance at the meeting via a post on X, describing the gathering as part of a “broader resistance movement.”

Atiku stated that the meeting was one “of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land,” emphasising the opposition’s determination to present a credible alternative to the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The high-profile meeting saw the attendance of several prominent political leaders, including former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal.

The coalition initially adopted the ADC in July as the platform through which it intends to contest power with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

In July, Atiku resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his resignation is due to irreconcilable differences that have emerged within the former ruling party.

He also noted that he found it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which, according to him, diverges from the foundational principles it stood for.Obi has, however, yet to officially defect to the ADC.
