5 Hollywood movies on feminists and self-made women that will inspire you

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Movies are our entertainment lens to see right through the world. If you want to learn about something, you can read books. But if you want to know more about a concept, happening, and history in a fun and visual way, watch a movie about it. While I was curating this list, I found some documentaries that are also engaging to watch for you to learn about great women as well as feminism.

P.S. Most of these movies are biographical because what better way to be inspired than by people who have gone before us to set their trail in history?

1. The Colour Room (2021)

The Colour Room is a British biographical movie about Clairice Clifrf, a British potter. Clarice was played by Bridgerton star, Phoebe Dyevenor. While this movie might not have received as much attention as Bridgerton, the Colour Room proved inspiring. It is a must-watch for young female artists, creatives, and artists who might be marginalized in their industry.

‘This is the true story of Clarice Cliff, a British pottery artist in the 1920s who beat the odds by rising from humble beginnings in the North of England in an industry dominated by men, to establish her own brand of ceramics to appeal to women that are still sold today.’- IMDb

2. Wheel of Time

Wheel of Time is an ongoing Amazon series of two released seasons. This movie is not in any way biographical nor is it historical. It is a fictional story written by Robert Jordan of a group of sorceresses called Aes Sedai who are saddled with the responsibility of keeping the time wheel turning. A subplot of this movie is the threat the women faced because of the amount of power they yielded.

‘Set in a high fantasy world where magic exists, but only some can access it, a woman named Moiraine crosses paths with five individuals. This sparks a dangerous, world-spanning journey. Based on the book series by Robert Jordan.’- IMDb

3. Queen Cleopatra (2023)

Queen Cleopatra is a Netflix docudrama explaining the life of the Egyptian queen after her father’s reign. The docudrama is very insightful. Several archaeologists, researchers, historians, and classicists give insights to the story as it unfolds. They corrected wrong notions that people might have harbored about Cleopatra’s descent, life, and behavior based solely on the analysis of history.

Queen Cleopatra is a ‘Netflix docudrama about Queen Cleopatra of Egypt of the Ptolemaic lineage from Macedonia, Greece, that ruled for 21 years, between the years 51 BC and 30 BC, ending with her suicide.’ It highlighted the dynamics, strategies as well as plots the Egyptian Queen used during her reign.

This Netflix miniseries focuses on the life of Madam C.J Walters, a black woman who sprang up the Negro hair care business in the early 20th century. If you are into cosmetics and the hair care industry, watch this masterpiece to inspire you. This movie was curated into four episodes highlighting the milestones the hair icon achieved.

‘The inspiring story of trailblazing African American entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker who built a haircare empire that made her America’s first female self-made millionaire.’- IMDb

5. Feminists: What were they thinking?

It is 2018, and renowned American feminists talk about their journey of feminism from 40 years ago till that date. These women explain their drive as well as how they voice out their ideologies. These women are not just feminists by just saying it. Their acts and deeds speak it.
