5 reasons everyone won’t be a tech bro

You’ve probably heard of the term “tech bro” before. It’s a slang term for a certain type of person who works in the tech industry, usually a young, white, male, who is arrogant, entitled, and obsessed with money and status.

They often work for big tech companies like Google, Facebook, or Amazon, or aspire to start their own disruptive startups. They wear hoodies and sneakers, drink Soylent and Red Bull, and use buzzwords like “disrupt”, “innovate”, and “scale”.

But not everyone who works in tech is a tech bro, or wants to be one. In fact, there are many reasons why being a tech bro is not a desirable or realistic goal for most people.

Here are five of them:

1. Tech bros are not representative of the diversity of the tech industry

The tech industry is not just composed of young white males. There are many people of different genders, races, ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, and experiences who work in tech, or want to work in tech.

They have different skills, interests, values, and goals. They face different challenges and opportunities. Further, they deserve to be recognized and respected for their contributions and potential, not marginalized or stereotyped by the dominant tech bro culture.

2. Tech bros are not immune to the problems of the tech industry

The tech industry is not a utopia. It has many issues and challenges that affect both the workers and the users of technology.

Some of these issues include: lack of diversity and inclusion, harassment and discrimination, unethical and harmful practices, privacy and security breaches, misinformation and manipulation, addiction and mental health problems, environmental and social impacts, etc.

Tech bros are not exempt from these problems. They may even contribute to them or benefit from them. They may also suffer from them or be harmed by them.

3. Tech bros are not guaranteed to succeed in the tech industry

The tech industry is not a meritocracy. It is not a level playing field where anyone can succeed based on their talent and hard work alone. It is influenced by many factors that are beyond the control or influence of individual workers.

Some of these factors include: luck and timing, network and connections, funding and resources, market and competition, regulations and policies, etc.

Tech bros may have some advantages or privileges that help them succeed in some aspects of the tech industry, but they also face many risks and uncertainties that may hinder their success or cause their failure.

4. Tech bros are not the only ones who can create value in the tech industry

The tech industry is not a zero-sum game where only one type of person or product can win or dominate. It is a complex and dynamic ecosystem where different types of people and products can coexist and collaborate to create value for themselves and others.

Tech bros may have some skills or ideas that are valuable in some contexts or domains of the tech industry, but they also have many limitations or gaps that need to be complemented or filled by others.

Tech bros are not the only ones who can create innovative or impactful solutions in the tech industry. They may even need to learn from or partner with others who have different perspectives or expertise.

5. Tech bros are not the only ones who can enjoy working in the tech industry

The tech industry is not a monolith where everyone has to follow the same path or fit into the same mold. It is a diverse and flexible space where everyone can find their own niche or role that suits their preferences and aspirations.

Tech bros may enjoy working in the tech industry for their own reasons, but they are not the only ones who can do so. There are many other ways to work in the tech industry that are more fulfilling or rewarding for different people.
