Valentine’s Day is often seen as a celebration of love and romance, but for many single people, it can also be a source of pressure, anxiety and loneliness.
If you’re not in a relationship, you might feel like you’re missing out on something, or that you have to do something special to make yourself feel better.
But the truth is, you don’t need a partner to enjoy Valentine’s Day, and you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Here are five things single people shouldn’t do on valentines day, and some alternatives to make the most of the day.
1. Don’t compare yourself to others
One of the worst things you can do on Valentine’s Day is to scroll through social media and see all the posts of happy couples, flowers, chocolates and gifts.
This can make you feel inadequate, jealous or sad about your own situation. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on yourself and what makes you happy.
Celebrate your achievements, your hobbies, your friends and your family. Remember that social media is not reality, and that everyone has their own struggles and challenges.
2. Don’t go on a first date
Valentine’s Day is not the best time to go on a first date with someone you barely know. The expectations are too high, the pressure is too much, and the atmosphere is too romantic.

You might end up with an awkward, uncomfortable or disappointing experience. Instead of going on a first date, go on a date with yourself.
Treat yourself to something you enjoy, whether it’s a movie, a spa, a book or a meal. Or, if you really want to meet someone new, join a group activity or event that interests you, where you can have fun and socialize without any strings attached.
3. Don’t spend too much money on yourself
It’s tempting to splurge on yourself on Valentine’s Day, especially if you see it as a way to compensate for not having a partner.
But spending too much money on yourself can backfire, as you might end up feeling guilty, regretful or broke afterwards. Instead of spending too much money on yourself, set a reasonable budget and stick to it.
Buy yourself something meaningful, useful or fun, but don’t go overboard. Or better yet, save your money for something bigger or more important in the future.
4. Don’t buy anything heart-shaped
Heart-shaped items are everywhere on Valentine’s Day, from soap to chocolates to cakes to picture frames.
They might seem cute or festive, but they’re also clichĆ© and tacky. And they don’t even look like real hearts – check the butcher’s slab.
Instead of buying anything heart-shaped, buy something that reflects your personality, your style or your taste. Something that you would use or enjoy any day of the year, not just on February 14th.
5. Don’t send an anonymous Valentine’s card
Sending an anonymous Valentine’s card might seem like a fun or romantic idea, but it can also be creepy or confusing for the recipient.
They might not know who it’s from, or they might think it’s from someone else. They might not appreciate it, or they might feel obligated to respond. And if they find out it’s from you, they might not feel the same way about you as you do about them.
Instead of sending an anonymous Valentine’s card, be honest and direct with your feelings. If you have a crush on someone, tell them in person or in a clear and respectful message. If they like you back, great. If not, move on.
