7 Entertainers Who Have Contested for Political Office

Some Nigerian entertainers have aspired to be in political offices. It is not always an easy task but some of them have made attempts and have gathered support too. Let’s take a look at some of these entertainers.

Yul Edochie

Actor, Yul Edochie, contested for governorship of Anambra state under the Democratic Peoples Congress (DPC) in 2017. He promised a change in the affairs of his state if elected. Although he won his party’s ticket, he did not win the governorship seat. Nevertheless, he is contesting in the 2023 presidential elections. He has also gotten the support of his father, veteran actor, Pete Edochie.

Desmond Elliot

Actor and filmmaker, Desmond Elliot declared his interest to represent Surulere Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2014. He contested under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and won the election in 2015. Also, he has announced that he would be contesting for the same office in 2023.

Muma Gee

In 2014, singer, Gift Eke, popularly known as Muma Gee, contested for the Federal House of Representatives seat for Abua/Odua and Ahoada Federal Constituency of Rivers State. She was on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. However, the mother of twins lost out in the general elections.

Kate Henshaw

Actress Kate Henshaw vied for political office in 2014 when she aspired to represent the Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal constituency under PDP. She lost in the primary elections.

Banky W

Singer and actor, Olubankole Wellington, aka Banky W, declared to run for House of Representatives in the 2019 elections. However, he lost out in the elections under the Modern Democratic Party. Regardless, he has not given up on that dream as he has declared to run again under the PDP. He aims to represent Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in 2023.

Kenny Saint Best

Gospel singer, Kenny Saint Best, declared her interest to become a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2014. Her intention was to represent the Ikeja Constituency under APC. However, she lost in the primary election.

9ice

“Gongo Aso” crooner, Abolore Akande, popularly known as 9ice launched his political aspirations in 2014 under the APC. He desired to represent Ogbomosho North/South/Orire Federal Constituency of Oyo State in the 2015 general elections. However, he lost out in the primaries.

Entertainers

Other entertainers who have showed interest in politics include J. Martins, Julius Agwu, Samklef and Ibinabo Fibresima. Singer Martins Justice aka J. Martins declared his interest to run for the Federal House of Representative, Arochukwu/Ohafia Constituency, Abia State in 2023. This would be the first attempt by the “Good or Bad” crooner to try his hands in politics.

Similarly, music producer, Samuel Oguachuba aka Samklef, declared his interest to run in the 2023 presidential elections. He would be contesting under the United Nigeria People Movement. Also, Comedian Julius Agwu declared interest to contest in the 2015 governorship elections in River State. He later pulled out of the race.

Former president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fibresima, decided to try her hands in politics in 2019. She contested for Local Government Council chairman of the Okrika LGA of Rivers state. According to reports, she was asked to step down for another candidate. She later defected from PDP to APC.
