FIFA approves Okonkwo’s international switch to Nigeria

FIFA has officially approved Arthur Okonkwo’s international switch from England to Nigeria. The decision now makes the 24-year-old goalkeeper eligible for Nigeria senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles.

The approval was documented on FIFA’s Change of Association platform on April 6, 2026. Checks the News Round The Clock also confirms his new affiliation now sits with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo developed through Arsenal’s academy from a young age. Standing close to two metres tall, he quickly built a reputation as a commanding presence.

He previously represented England across several youth levels between 2015 and 2019. However, he never featured for the senior national team, leaving the door open for change.

Now starring for Wrexham A.F.C., he has become a key figure in their Championship campaign. His performances have included crucial saves and consistent displays under pressure.

His rise has not gone unnoticed, especially among Nigeria’s technical crew. Talks with head coach Eric Chelle during a London tournament accelerated the process.

Still, paperwork delays meant he missed the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco. That setback, however, has not dimmed expectations surrounding his arrival.
