The Secretary to the Lagos State Government, ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, has stated that the Southwest region could become Nigeria’s largest economy if it harmonises and develops an integrated transport network across its six states.
Salu-Hundeyin made the remark while speaking at the Southwest Secretaries to the State Governments (SSGs) Forum, held in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
She stressed the urgent need to strengthen rail infrastructure, while promoting synergy between rail, road, air, and sea transport in the region.“It is achievable,” she said.
“Lagos has demonstrated the benefits of a functional multimodal transport system, and we are still pushing beyond our current success to achieve more.”
She maintained that a regionally coordinated transport system would save time, enhance safety, and boost productivity.

While acknowledging the challenges, she urged her counterparts not to be discouraged.
“The opportunities and benefits far outweigh the obstacles. By fostering connectivity within and between Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Osun States, we can create a unified and coordinated region that works for the collective good of our people.”
The Forum, themed “Strategic Partnership for Regional Development,” was convened by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, and focused on infrastructure development, particularly the creation of an enabling environment for rail transport.
Also speaking at the event, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State highlighted the importance of truth and integrity in governance.
He encouraged SSGs to speak truth to power respectfully, emphasising their central role in policy implementation.
He also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos for his leadership as both Governor and Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum.
The host SSG, Habibat Omolara Adubiaro, appreciated her colleagues for their dedication and participation.
Attendees included Ogun SSG Tokunbo Talabi, Ondo SSG Taiwo Fasosanti, and Oyo SSG, Olanike Adeyemo.
Osun State was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office. Permanent Secretaries and Directors from across the region also participated in knowledge-sharing sessions facilitated by seasoned professionals.
