Meta has officially launched a repost feature on Instagram allowing users to reshare other people’s content directly to their profiles creating a new layer of visibility and engagement on the platform.
The repost feature supports content types such as Reels carousel posts and single photos.
Once reposted these posts are stored in a new “Reposts” tab on the user’s profile similar to how tagged photos are displayed.
Meta clarified that all engagement likes views and comments remain attributed to the original creator even when shared by others.
According to the company, the feature was developed to help users amplify content they enjoy while ensuring that credit and visibility are preserved.
“Reposts not only help your content reach more people but also ensure all views and engagement are attributed to you the original creator” Instagram stated.
This development follows years of user workarounds such as using third party apps or adding posts to Stories which disappear after 24 hours.
With the new tool Instagram now matches similar repost functionalities seen on platforms like TikTok and X formerly Twitter where retweets and video reposts are integral to user activity.
New map and friends focused features
Alongside reposts Instagram is rolling out additional updates to strengthen social interaction and real time connectivity among users.
A major addition is the introduction of a location sharing map within the Direct Messages interface Inspired by Snapchat’s Snap Map this feature allows users to opt in to share their last active location with close friends.
It also includes discoverable public content tied to specific hotspots such as events or crowded locations Instagram says this tool is designed to enhance in person connections while respecting user privacy through opt in controls.
Additionally the “Friends” tab in Reels has been expanded Users can now see what their friends have liked commented on or reposted.
This tab also includes “Blends” a feature that curates shared Reels based on mutual interests Users can mute certain friends or hide their activity through granular privacy settings.

Positioning and criticism
Meta is framing these updates as part of a broader pivot toward social discovery and user to user interaction.
The platform once focused exclusively on photo sharing has evolved significantly in response to competition from TikTok Snapchat and other fast moving apps.
Industry observers have criticized the feature rollouts as derivative Instagram’s adoption of Stories came from Snapchat Reels mimicked TikTok and now the repost tab closely resembles repost mechanisms on X.
Despite this Instagram defends its approach as user centric claiming these features reflect demands from its global audience base.
