FCCPC secures N10bn refunds for consumers

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has recovered over N10 billion for aggrieved customers after complaints against banks, fintechs, and others.

The recoveries were confirmed in a statement by Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at FCCPC, following updated consumer complaint data released Thursday.

According to the Commission, the data covered March to August 2025 and tracked complaints lodged across multiple sectors through its resolution platforms.

Banking recorded the highest complaints with 3,173 cases, followed by FMCG with 1,543, fintech with 1,442, and electricity with 458.

Other sectors included e-commerce with 412 cases, telecommunications with 409, retail and wholesale with 329, aviation with 243, IT with 131, and transport with 114.

In total, 9,091 complaints were resolved, resulting in N10 billion refunded, reflecting systemic issues like unfair charges, deductions, and failed services.

FCCPC CEO Tunji Bello said the numbers reflect daily consumer struggles, stressing the agency’s resolve to enforce the FCCPA and ensure accountability.

He added that banking and fintech sectors dominate in financial impact, showing urgent need for tighter regulation alongside the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The electricity sector, ranked fourth, highlighted persistent billing disputes and poor service, requiring closer coordination with regulators and DisCos.

The Commission noted that e-commerce disputes, while low in monetary value, show high recurrence, making it a growing consumer pain point nationwide.

It said sector-specific complaint data aligns with its FCCPA 2018 mandate to enforce consumer protection and make public information on enforcement.

FCCPC urged firms to strengthen internal complaint systems and advised consumers to keep reporting violations through its complaint portal and offices.
