X introduces marketplace for inactive usernames

Elon Musk’s X has launched the X Handle Marketplace, enabling Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers to claim inactive usernames.

The platform said the feature allows eligible users to acquire dormant handles either free or through paid options. X described it as an “industry-first solution to redistribute handles that are no longer in use.”

Subscribers can search for available usernames and submit requests through the marketplace. Approved handles are transferred directly to their accounts.

Handles fall into two categories: Priority and Rare. Priority handles, often full names or alphanumeric phrases, are available free to Premium subscribers. However, users who cancel or downgrade subscriptions lose access after a 30-day grace period.

Rare handles, including short or culturally significant names like @Tom or @Pizza, can be obtained through public drops or direct purchases.

In public drops, several users may apply for the same handle, with selection based on platform activity, intended use, and engagement. Direct purchases allow select users to buy rare handles at prices ranging from $2,500 to over $1 million, depending on demand.

Purchased rare handles remain with users even if their Premium subscription ends.

The marketplace aims to strengthen X’s subscription ecosystem and monetize high-value usernames, while offering users access to desirable digital identities.
