Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statewide broadcast on Friday morning, Fintiri confirmed that he was not moving alone; his entire State Executive Council and thousands of supporters have joined the governing party.
The announcement settles months of intense speculation following high-profile visits from President Bola Tinubu and the governor’s recent hosting of the APC leadership for Ramadan Iftar.

The governor’s formal exit follows a week of dramatic upheaval in the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
Earlier this week, 15 lawmakers, led by Speaker Bathiya Wesley and Deputy Speaker Buba Jijiwa, resigned from the PDP during a plenary session.
The defectors cited a “lingering and persistent crisis” at the national level of the PDP as the primary reason for their departure.
“Our slogan, Kafan shi Kafan mu (wherever he goes, we go), still stands,” noted one lawmaker, signalling the total alignment of the state’s legislative and executive branches with the governor’s new political direction.
Fintiri’s defection marks a strategic victory for the APC and a significant setback for the opposition.
With Fintiri’s exit, the PDP is now left with only three governors nationwide, reducing its influence ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
