Sidi Ould Tah from Mauritania has been elected as the new president of the African Development Bank Group.
This decision was made on Thursday during the Bank’s Annual Meetings held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The announcement came from Niale Kaba, who is the Planning and Development Minister for Côte d’Ivoire and also heads the Board of Governors for the Bank Group.
The election was carried out by the Bank’s Board of Governors, which includes ministers and central bank governors from the 81 countries that make up the Bank’s membership.
These countries come from both regional and non-regional areas.
Tah won the presidency after securing over 50 percent of the required votes from both groups, beating four other candidates in the race.
His challengers in the election included Amadou Hott of Senegal, Samuel Maimbo of Zambia, Mahamat Abbas Tolli of Chad, and Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala of South Africa.
The contest was part of a well-organized process supervised by the Steering Committee of the Board of Governors.
Tah is expected to begin his role on September 1, 2025, following the completion of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina’s second term.
