Aitana Bonmatí has been dealt a devastating setback after undergoing surgery on a fractured leg that will rule her out for months. The Barcelona and Spain midfielder sustained the injury during a national team training session, where she landed awkwardly and immediately required medical attention.
Barça has confirmed her recovery will last around five months. The 27-year-old, who was preparing for Spain’s decisive Women’s Nations League clash with Germany, later shared an emotional update on social media.
She explained that the operation went smoothly and admitted she needed both physical and mental reset after an exhausting run of elite football.
Bonmatí confessed she had considered taking a break earlier but pushed through, only for her body to force an unexpected halt. She described the injury as a hard lesson yet promised to approach the coming months with determination.
Barça hit by injury crisis as key stars miss crucial stretch
Her extended absence now deepens an already worrying injury situation for the Spanish champions. Barcelona are without Patri Guijarro until the new year, while Kika Nazareth also remains unavailable for several weeks.

Furthermore, winger Salma Paralluelo is sidelined until January, and forward Ewa Pajor continues her recovery from a knee problem expected to heal in December. Bonmatí’s influence this season has been exceptional, as she has produced goals, assists, and leadership across 15 appearances.

Therefore, her absence forces coach Pere Romeu to rethink his tactical approach and rely heavily on younger or less experienced midfielders. Although Barcelona remain six points clear at the top of Liga F, the coming months present a real test of squad depth.
Moreover, missing their captain for nearly the entire campaign also complicates their Champions League ambitions. With the final scheduled in late May, Bonmatí is almost certain to miss the competition.
Even so, Barcelona hope that her recovery remains on schedule, as the club focuses on navigating a tough period without several star players.
