Aiyedatiwa hails Democracy heroes, reaffirms commitment to good governance

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has reaffirmed Nigeria’s progress on the democratic path, describing June 12 as a defining chapter in the nation’s political history.

He made the remarks on Thursday at a commemorative event marking the 32nd anniversary of the annulled 1993 presidential election, held at The Dome, Akure.

Speaking at the Democracy Day ceremony, the Governor reflected on the significance of the June 12 election, won by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

He noted that although the historic election was annulled, it became a rallying point for Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a foundation for present-day political freedoms.

“The June 12 election remains a watershed in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Though the country suffered setbacks, we have also recorded gains worth consolidating to build a more inclusive and accountable society,” Aiyedatiwa stated.

The governor observed that Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 marked a turning point, leading to strengthen democratic institutions and increased civic freedoms.

He emphasised that the losses suffered under military rule—such as economic stagnation, weakened institutions, and human rights violations—underscore the importance of preserving democracy.

Paying tribute to MKO Abiola and other democracy icons, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the sacrifices of notable figures like Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Oba Olu Falae, Balarabe Musa, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Madam Kudirat Abiola, and Chief Abraham Adesanya, as well as civil society groups and student activists.

Highlighting achievements under his administration, the governor said his government remains committed to inclusive development, good governance, and people-centred policies.

He listed key accomplishments in education, healthcare, road construction, workers’ welfare, rural electrification, and agricultural development.

“We have made deliberate efforts to enhance the quality of life across Ondo State. From improved security infrastructure to strategic economic interventions, we are building a state that delivers tangible dividends of democracy,” he added.

In a keynote lecture delivered on behalf of Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele by Ondo State Attorney General, Kayode Ajulo, the 1993 election was described as a symbol of hope and sacrifice.

Bamidele acknowledged the democratic losses—such as delayed political development and the suppression of voices—but highlighted major gains, including 25 years of uninterrupted civilian rule and renewed civic consciousness.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for sustaining the legacy of June 12 through bold reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.Chairman of the occasion, Tunji Abayomi, urged Aiyedatiwa to sustain democratic ideals and deepen public trust.

He stressed that democracy must deliver meaningful benefits to the people.

Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Fasoranti, in his vote of thanks, hailed the governor’s dedication to democratic governance and described the June 12 anniversary as a moment of national reflection and pride.
