Aiyedatiwa hails Fasoranti at 99, calls for cultural revival

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has described Reuben Fasoranti as a beacon of integrity, patriotism and courage whose life of service continues to inspire generations.

The governor made the remarks on Saturday in Akure at the second edition of the Reuben Fasoranti Public Service Lecture, held in celebration of the Afenifere leader’s 99th birthday.

The event, organised by the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA), Ondo State Chapter, took place at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

According to Aiyedatiwa, Fasoranti’s unwavering commitment to the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos makes him a living example of principled leadership.

“What we are celebrating today is not just the number of years, but the quality of life and selfless service that Pa Fasoranti represents,” he said.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, “Wanted: A Strong and United Yoruba Race as Panacea for Reviving the Vanishing Yoruba Values and Culture”, the governor lamented the erosion of cultural values and called for a concerted revival effort.

He urged elders to engage youths through cultural education and intergenerational dialogue.

“As a government, we are committed to preserving our heritage and empowering the youth to grow and contribute meaningfully to our cultural revival,” Aiyedatiwa said.

Delivering the keynote lecture, former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel stressed the need for Yoruba unity, saying deliberate educational, political and communal strategies were needed to safeguard cultural identity.

He also paid glowing tribute to Fasoranti’s legacy of justice and development.In his address, UIAA Ondo State Chairman Yinka Akinola praised Fasoranti as a model alumnus who embodied academic excellence and moral fortitude.

The Chief Host, Seinde Arogbofa, credited the nonagenarian with standing firm against external threats to Yoruba values.

University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor Kayode Adebowale, represented by Registrar G.O. Saliu lauded Fasoranti for upholding ideals that strengthen society.

The Chairman of the event, Williams Olu Aderounmu, called for the conferment of a Yoruba global award on the celebrant.

Traditional rulers also paid tribute to Fasoranti’s legacy, with the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, highlighting his historic ties to Owo and his pivotal role in preserving Yoruba identity.
