Aiyedatiwa pledges increased investments in school infrastructure

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has promised to increase investments in school infrastructure, technical education, and students’ welfare.

The governor made the pledge yesterday during a meeting with student leaders from tertiary institutions across the state at the Governor’s Office in Akure.

Aiyedatiwa commended the student representatives for their mature and responsible conduct, noting that their cooperation has led to a sustained period of peace in the education sector since he assumed office.

“Since I became governor, there has been no student unrest as it were. You have engaged clearly without any form of violent agitation,” he stated.

Affirming his administration’s commitment to youth development and industrial growth, the governor stressed a renewed focus on technical and vocational education, stating, “We are paying more attention to technical education. Investors are coming, and they will need skilled labour.”

He also announced the approval of five new buses for student bodies across the state’s tertiary institutions, with promises of more to come, as part of his commitment to student welfare, which includes scholarships, grants, and other financial interventions.

Addressing infrastructure concerns, the governor highlighted ongoing projects, including the reconstruction of the Akungba–Ikare road, initiated to reduce accidents and boost local commerce.

He also assured the student leaders that the electricity supply challenges at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) would be addressed promptly.

While acknowledging the current national economic hardship, Aiyedatiwa urged students to remain patient, asserting that the difficulties are temporary and that the national reforms are already yielding positive results.

To tackle the student accommodation deficit, the governor called for collaboration, urging private investors to build hostels on or near campuses to complement government efforts and enhance student security, describing it as a “viable venture.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Segun Omoyofunmi, praised the governor for approving double-fold bursaries and scholarships and initiating the under-17 football competition.

Kelvin Olaolu (KSO), the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Students’ Affairs, appreciated the governor’s peaceful leadership style and support for the student community, including extending aid to private institutions.

Student leaders used the opportunity to present their concerns.

Appeals were made for improved transportation, enhanced security, and general welfare.

Precious Ikuenomore, Chairperson of the National Female Students Association of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter appealed for improved safety for female students, citing the distance of hostels from the University of Medical Sciences campus.

NANS JCC Chairman, Mayomi Adekanye, and NAOSS President, Temitope Alade, urged consistency in addressing accommodation and transportation issues, as well as the establishment of security outposts near campuses.
