Aiyedatiwa says road construction key to agribusiness

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has flagged off the dualisation of the Akure-Idanre Road, fulfilling one of his key campaign promises and signalling a major step in the state’s infrastructure drive.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at Arakale-Oke-Aro Junction in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the road as crucial to the state’s economic agenda, particularly in the areas of agribusiness and tourism.

He stressed that no road project under his administration would be abandoned.

“This project stands as a powerful testimony to the resolve of our administration to build an Ondo State where opportunities are not just promised but are accessible, a place where every citizen can thrive in an environment of progress and shared prosperity,” the governor said.

The dualisation project, now underway, covers Phase One — a 10-kilometre stretch from Cashhold Junction to KM10 along the Akure-Idanre axis.

It will feature a 28-metre-wide carriageway, dual lanes measuring 9.3 metres each, 1.5-metre walkways, a 3-metre utility bay, median lines, traffic lights, and solar-powered street lighting.

Governor Aiyedatiwa linked the project to his administration’s 7-Point Development Agenda, tagged ‘OUR EASE’, noting that the road has long posed safety and logistical challenges due to its outdated single lane.

“Today, we begin to change that story,” he declared.

He highlighted the project’s potential to enhance tourism to the iconic Idanre Hills and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from Idanre to Akure, thereby stimulating trade, job creation, and regional connectivity.

The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for boosting states’ fiscal capacities, which he said has enabled critical developmental initiatives.

He assured that all ongoing road projects across the state, including inherited ones, would be completed to high standards.

Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Olawoye Abiola, praised the governor for prioritising strategic infrastructure, describing the project as one that will benefit generations.

He assured that the road construction would meet top engineering standards and adhere strictly to timelines.

However, the Chairman of Akure South Local Government, Gbenga Fasua, called the day ‘remarkable and unforgettable,’ while his Idanre counterpart, Smart Omotadowa, noted that the road would significantly improve mobility and regional integration.

The member representing Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency, Festus Akingbaso, applauded the state government for delivering on its promises, calling the project a symbol of responsive governance.

Managing Director of Roosco Construction Ltd, Marcel Alrouss, whose firm is executing the project, outlined plans for modern drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, and enhanced safety features, pledging timely and quality delivery.

The traditional ruler of the Akure Kingdom, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, commended Aiyedatiwa for honouring his word and delivering a major boost to the state capital’s infrastructure.
