Akpabio elected Senate President, Abbas emerges Speaker of the House of Representatives


The All Progressives Congress, APC, preferred candidate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged as the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly while Tajudeen Abbas was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, Senator Jibrin Barau from Kano North Senatorial District, emerged unopposed as Senate Deputy President, and Benjamin Okezie Kalu (APC, Abia) was elected as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives unopposed.

Akpabio from Akwa Ibom polled 63 votes to beat his closest rival, Senator Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara state who scored 46 votes.

Whereas, Abbas, a preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Kaduna scored 353 votes defeating his rival and former Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase, who got three votes.

Senator Akpabio was sworn in as the President of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly succeeding Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is also a member of the 10th Senate while  Barau succeeded Ovie Omo-Agege.

Also, Abbas was sworn in to succeed former Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila and Kalu succeed former deputy speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase who is a member of the house.
