The Akwa Ibom Government has implemented precautionary measures to prevent a cholera outbreak in the state.
State Commissioner for Health, Professor Augustine Umoh, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Friday.
According to Umoh, the government has started educating residents across all 31 Local Government Areas on the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene.
In addition, the state government has ensured that primary health centres are well-stocked with necessary medications to address any potential cholera outbreak.
āFor now, there is no reported case of cholera outbreak in the state,” the Commissioner said.

āResidents during this period are advised to boil water before drinking, wash their hands with soap and clean water regularly, especially after use of toilet and before eating, wash fruits and other food items before eating,ā Umoh advised.
The commissioner added that the state government has reactivated all emergency operations centres across the state to handle any potential outbreak.
He emphasized that the government will continue to monitor and ensure surveillance, particularly in border communities.
Umoh advised residents to use a salt sugar solution in case of diarrhoea and to report to the nearest health centre for prompt treatment.
According to a recent report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, between January 1 and June 11, over 1,141 suspected cholera cases were recorded, with over 65 confirmed and 30 resulting in deaths across 96 local government areas in 30 states.
