Al-Nassr abandon pursuit of Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma

Al-Nassr’s hopes of signing 27-year-old Kaoru Mitoma have officially ended after Brighton firmly rejected their advances.

The Saudi Pro League (SPL) side had tabled a €65 million (£54.42m) bid, expecting negotiations to continue. However, Brighton made it clear that they had no interest in selling their Japanese winger.

Despite initial expectations of a follow-up offer, Brighton took a firm stance. They insisted they would not consider any deal, regardless of the fee. This position, combined with Mitoma’s apparent disinterest in leaving, forced Al-Nassr to abandon their pursuit.

Brighton’s firm stand leaves Al-Nassr with no choice

Brighton’s decision was not solely about the transfer fee. The club emphasised that Mitoma remains a key player in their squad. Moreover, they reassured Al-Nassr that financial gain was not a factor in their refusal.

Additionally, the club believed the winger had no intention of moving away from the Amex Stadium. With these factors in mind, Al-Nassr accepted that securing Mitoma’s signature was an impossible task.

Mitoma’s impact and commitment to Brighton despite Al-Nassr’s interest

Since arriving from Kawasaki Frontale in 2021, Mitoma has made a significant impact. The winger has played 92 matches, scoring 18 goals across all competitions. His consistent performances have made him a key figure in Brighton’s attack.

Further proving his importance, Mitoma is the only Brighton player to have featured in all 23 Premier League games this season. His presence on the pitch has been crucial as Fabian Hurzeler’s side continues to push for a strong league finish.

Long-term future secured with new contract

Brighton’s firm rejection aligns with their long-term vision. Mitoma extended his contract in October 2023, securing his stay until June 2027. With this deal in place, Brighton hold full control over his future.

Al-Nassr may have been eager to add him to their ranks, but Brighton’s stance has ended any speculation. With the SPL winter transfer window having closed on the evening of Friday, 31st January, the matter is now settled.
