All you need to know about Women’s History Month

Women’s history month is celebrated every year in March to commemorate the contributions of women in society. It begins on March 1 and ends on March 31.

History

The origin of Women’s History Month can be traced back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911. Laura X organised a march and the march led to the creation of The Women’s History Research Center. The Women’s History Research Center keeps an archive of the women’s movement. They recorded and documented films and provided resources that are now still available.

Laura X thought it unfair that half the population had only one day a year to be celebrated. So, she called for the National Women’s History Month to be built around International Women’s Day. Contrary to popular opinion, the latter precedes the former.

What is now Women’s History Month was initially Women’s History Week. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980, as National Women’s History Week.

Why we need to celebrate women

When we look at history, we will understand how cruel the world was to women at a point. Women were not allowed to vote, drive or work. It was frowned upon for a woman to even hold an opinion. Now, women cannot only vote but we can also earn a living. There is still a long way to go but it is also important to acknowledge that we’ve come a long way. The rights we enjoy today had to be fought for.
