Amorim says Manchester United cannot replicate Sporting’s style after stunning victory over City

Ruben Amorim left the Sporting Lisbon fans with a thrilling farewell on Tuesday night as he guided his team to a shocking 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League.

With his move to Manchester United imminent, Amorim wanted to end on a high at the Jose Alvalade Stadium—and his players delivered. Star striker Viktor Gyökeres scored a hat-trick to seal a famous victory over Manchester United’s city rivals.

Despite the impressive scoreline, Sporting’s win didn’t come from dominance in possession. The hosts had just 27% of the ball and managed only nine shots to City’s 20. Yet, they capitalised on their chances, while City struggled – one frustrating moment for the Premier League champions being an Erling Haaland penalty miss that struck the crossbar.

I will start “from a different point” at United

After the match, Amorim tempered expectations for United fans. “We cannot transport one reality to another,” he said.

He explained that United cannot replicate Sporting’s defensive style in the Premier League. He emphasised that his work at United will start “from a different point”.

Sporting fans gave their departing manager an emotional send-off. Before the game, a tifo reading “Obrigado” (“Thank You”) and images of Amorim were displayed, honouring his achievements. During his four-year tenure, he won two division titles, ending a 19-year drought for Sporting.

After the final whistle, Amorim waved a tearful goodbye, and was greeted warmly by his supporters. He was also also congratulated by Pep Guardiola, his soon-to-be rival.

With Sporting sitting second in their group, Amorim leaves the club in a strong position. He joins United who are currently 13th in the Premier League.
