Arsenal win Community Shield after penalty shootout victory over Manchester City

Fabio Vieira scored the decisive kick as Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 on penalties to win the 2023 FA Community Shield.

The win was a much needed one for Mikel Arteta’s side who already lost thrice to City this year.

Substitute Cole Palmer curled home a screamer in the 77th minute before Leandro Trossard’s deflected beat Stefan Ortega in additional time.

During the penalty shootout, substitute Kevin de Bruyne hit the crossbar before Rodri’s effort was well saved by Aaron Ramsdale. 23-year-old Vieira then converted his kick to secure Arsenal’s 17th Community Shield.

Earlier, Martin Ødegaard, Trossard and Bukayo Saka all scored their spot kicks while Bernardo Silva netted City’s only penalty goal.

During the last English Premier League season, the Gunners led the table for 248 days but fumbled thereafter. Manchester City took advantage of Arsenal’s slip to overtake them and claim the title.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s summer signings Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber all had their competitive debuts at Wembley. However, Havertz failed to turn into the net two massive first-half chances.

That did not deter the Gunners from relenting even after going behind. They kept pushing and eventually found the goal in the 101st minute of action. Trossard’s left-footed shot deflected off Manuel Akanji and went past Ortega. They eventually carried the day after penalties.
