Aruna Quadri retains ITTF African championship men’s singles title

Aruna Quadri has defeated Ahmed Saleh from Egypt to win his second straight title in the men’s singles of the 2023 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African championship.

The Nigerian walloped his Egyptian opponent in four straight sets to defend his title on Sunday in Tunisia.

In 2022, 35-year-old Quadri came from two sets down to overcome arch rival Omar Assar to clinch his ITTF crown.

In Tunis, Quadri took the first set with a dominant 11-2 win. He won 12-10 in the second set which made Saleh completely overwhelmed and lost the subsequent set by 11-6.

Coincidentally, the duo of 47-year-old Funke Oshonaike and Fatimo Bello claimed gold in the women’s doubles event.

Generally, Team Nigeria won only two gold medals at the 2023 ITTF African championship.
