The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna as its new president.
He was elected during the 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin on Sunday, May 11.
Piwuna is a consultant psychiatrist from the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and oversees student affairs at the University of Jos.
He replaces Prof. Victor Osodeke of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The leadership contest was between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi.
This change in leadership comes at a time when the union is dealing with major concerns affecting its members.
There is ongoing tension about how the recently released Earned Academic Allowances will be shared among universities.
Some members believe the distribution method is unfair, sparking talks about a possible strike.
The union is also facing other long-standing problems, including the rising number of lecturers leaving the country for better opportunities elsewhere.
