On a cloudy Sunday afternoon, Yoruba enthusiasts and indigenes decided to gather at the race course, Adamasingba to celebrate culture. The race course was properly decorated to emphasize the Yoruba culture and guests couldn’t resist taking pictures with the backdrop.
Atelewo in conjunction with Ayo Adams hosted the maiden edition of the Yoruba party. The organisers emphasised that the event was not in any way a replica of the Ojude Oba Festival. It was a different celebration on its own. Last year, they held a program somewhat like the Yoruba party at the University of Ibadan, but they decided to make it bigger this year.
Various regberegbe formed Egbe that spiced the event up
The event commenced with different regberegbe, that is groups dancing and making an entrance. The groups were formed based on like interest. The event had egbe onikoko, cocoa merchants, egbe alaso, cloth sellers, egbe agbe, the farmers, egbe ode, the hunters and egbe oloti, the drinkers. Each group danced signifying what their groups stood for.
Later on, the event moved to inter-group bants. Each group was represented by their Baba and Iya Egbe. Each egbe was trying to convince the public why their group was the best. Egbe alaso said that they are the only reason the party is exciting because they provided the clothes attendees wore to show off. Without them, no one would have looked elegant in the party.
No doubt, egbe alaso were correct until the egbe agbe countered them by saying they planted the cotton and other clothing raw materials used to make clothes. That comment ruled out the egbe alaso’s bant.
The egbe onikoko came out as the wealthy branch emphasising their achievement in building cocoa house which was not far from the event’s venue. Egbe olode claimed that they are the one responsible for keeping the town safe for everyone to carry out their activities.
Egbe Oloti came in last in the banter session with the rizz. The Baba Egbe, Idris Animashahun scored all points by saying all the money made by people in other groups would eventually be spent on faaji. And when a Yoruba man says faaji, beer is involved.

Yoruba men showed that the language is effective in “wooing” ladies.

And finally
The Atelewo Yoruba party ticks all the boxes of a cultural event that elevates the Yoruba culture. The event is nowhere done as the organisers promised another edition for December this year. There was a high profile of networking in this edition and I personally look forward to the next edition.
