Amid growing discussions around realignments within political space as various groups begin positioning ahead of the next election cycle, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that plans to form a strong opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections are well underway and will soon be formally unveiled.

Atiku made this known yesterday during a meeting with a delegation of Kannywood practitioners and key North West opinion leaders in Abuja.

He emphasised that the coalition is not a mere political experiment but a serious and deliberate effort to ‘recover and rebuild Nigeria’ in line with the aspirations of its citizens.

“I told the visiting forum that the envisaged coalition is a deliberate effort to recover and rebuild Nigeria in line with the yearnings and aspirations of the people,” Atiku stated.

The delegation was led by Aslam Aliyu, a prominent Zamfara politician and leader of the PAA 2027, New Media & Digital Communications Forum, a coalition of digital media stakeholders.

The forum comprises members from Kannywood, Zamfara TOP 10, and other affiliated groups.

According to Atiku, the forum disclosed that they were mobilising a regional coalition to support the broader national opposition movement ahead of 2027.

Their commitment, they said, stemmed from their review of the 2023 elections, which highlighted significant voter awareness and information gaps.

Some members of the forum, who reportedly played roles in the election of the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government, expressed deep regret for supporting what they now describe as an “incompetent and clueless leadership.”

They pledged their support for the emerging opposition coalition.

Atiku assured the group that the 2027 elections would not follow the status quo and urged them to take their mobilisation efforts seriously by enlightening the electorate on the need to embrace the coalition’s mission to rebuild the country.

“I am aware of the pervasive level of insecurity and other challenges citizens are facing on a daily basis. Suffice it to say that we, in the coalition, have the individual and collective capacity to tackle them headlong,” Atiku said.
