Awoniyi scores first goal in almost a year as Nottingham Forest wallop Wolves

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Nottingham Forest extended their impressive Premier League winning streak to six games with a commanding 3-0 victory over Wolves at the Molineux. It is their longest top-flight winning streak since 1967.

English forward Morgan Gibbs-White opened the scoring early on with a deflected strike against his former club. Wolves had chances to level, with Jorgen Strand Larsen missing three good opportunities to equalise.

Chris Wood, however, showed his clinical edge by doubling Forest’s lead before half-time – his 12th league goal of the campaign. In stoppage time, Nigeria’s Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi sealed the win with a third goal. He was assisted by fellow substitute James -Prowse for his tap in.

Awoniyi’s goal was his first since February 2024. It was a good way to kick-start the new year with many Nigerian fans excited for the former junior international.

The win means Forest are level on points (20) with second-placed Arsenal, leaving their supporters dreaming of a Champions League spot next season. Confidence is surging within the team as they close the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just six points.

Matz Sels played a pivotal role in the game, making spectacular saves to deny Wolves any hope of a comeback. Despite the scoreline, Wolves put up a spirited fight, but they were undermined by the absence of key players.

Wolves’ set-backs

With three senior centre-backs injured and captain Nelson Semedo suspended, Wolves’ defensive frailties were evident. The suspension of Matheus Cunha and injuries to standout players like Andre further exposed the team’s lack of squad depth.

“This defeat,” noted manager Vitor Pereira, “is a reminder of the scale of the challenge ahead.” The loss keeps Wolves hovering just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Cunha’s expected return against Newcastle offers some hope, but Pereira knows reinforcements are urgently needed.

For Forest, the transformation under Nuno has been remarkable. “This team is confident and mature,” a fan said, as chants of “We’re coming for Liverpool” echoed through the stands. With momentum on their side, Forest’s charge up the table continues.
