The Minister for Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has advocated for enhanced Geospatial Data Infrastructure during his participation in the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NGDI) Workshop.
The event, focused on reviewing and harmonizing the National Geo-Information Policy alongside the proposed National Geospatial Data Infrastructure Bill, provided a crucial platform for discussions on advancing data utilization and technological progress.
Minister Bagudu underscored the Budget and Economic Planning Ministry’s commitment to recognizing the pivotal role of innovative data utilization in fostering access and driving technological advancements across various sectors.
He emphasized the global trend of sharing resources, ideas, and information, particularly in science, research, and innovation, highlighting its potential to propel progress and enhance decision-making processes.
Acknowledging the increasing prevalence of geospatial information in daily life, the minister pointed out the predominant reliance on datasets determined by external sources.

To address developmental needs, security challenges, and climate issues, he stressed the imperative of domestically generating comprehensive geospatial data.
He further highlighted the primary challenge of fostering cooperation among stakeholders within the geospatial ecosystem to facilitate the creation and utilization of indigenous data resources.
He stressed the importance of integration and innovation in addressing technological issues, enhancing access, and improving interfacing capabilities.
However, Minister Bagudu reaffirmed his commitment to leveraging resources and fostering innovation to drive national growth and development, expressing confidence that the concerted efforts towards enhancing geospatial data infrastructure will contribute significantly to the nation’s progress and prosperity.
