Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has denied reports that Tinubu is Nigeria’s substantive petroleum minister.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Onanuga clarified that Tinubu never assumed the title of petroleum minister.

When asked if the president intended to act as “Minister of Petroleum,” Onanuga refuted the claim. He pointed out that two appointed ministers already handle the oil sector’s affairs, with one focused on gas.

Onanuga noted that the media had inaccurately attributed the petroleum minister role to the president. He explained that Tinubu’s administration is prioritizing Nigeria’s gas sector, as the country is “more of a gas country than an oil country.”

He also highlighted former President Obasanjo’s recent remarks, admitting a past oversight in focusing less on gas. According to Onanuga, Tinubu is addressing this by increasing attention on gas development.

Furthermore, Onanuga stated that the president actively supervises all ministries and is involved in all governmental sectors. He reassured Nigerians that Tinubu is aware of citizens’ challenges and is not indifferent to their struggles.

“President Tinubu feels the pain of Nigerians and assures them that relief is on the horizon. Some have resorted to calling him ‘T-pain’ out of mischief, but he is not that. He’s here to heal, not to hurt.

“The President has never shied away from acknowledging that Nigerians are going through difficult times. He is working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure that the nation moves towards a future of prosperity.

“This is a painful transition, but it’s part of a long-term strategy to stabilize and grow the economy,” Onanuga said.
