Being an artiste has changed my life – Tems opens up on growth and vulnerability

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Tems, has spoken about how her journey as an artist has transformed her personality and outlook on life.

The 31-year-old revealed that before rising to fame, she was strongly independent and often kept people at a distance. However, her experiences in music have helped her become more open and emotionally expressive.

Speaking in a recent interview with Doose Of Society, Tems said, ”

Tems: “Being an artist has changed my life. There are a lot of people that know me. It made me grow, I had to shed a lot of habits that were holding me back—one of those things was my hyper-independency and the thing I do where I push people away.”

She added, ‘I have now learned to embrace love and just be open, and be free to give love and be vulnerable without feeling odd.”

Tems began her music career in 2018 after leaving her job to pursue music full-time, debuting with the single ‘Mr Rabel’. Her global breakthrough came in 2020 when she featured on Essence by Wizkid, a track that gained massive international recognition.


Since then, she has worked with global stars such as Drake, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and J. Cole. She has also earned two Grammy Awards and continues to break records, recently becoming the first Nigerian artist to surpass 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
