BREAKDOWN: January transfer window opening/closing dates in Europe’s top 5 leagues


As clubs seek to strengthen their squad, another opportunity presents itself in form of the January transfer window for that to be done.

Being a busy period, there will be movement of players across teams and leagues in Europe.

The aim is for teams to get better as they pursue their quest for silverware.

At the conclusion of the window, otherwise known as ‘deadline day’, clubs in Europe’s top leagues will be handed the liberty to sign players as free agents. And as long as they are not officially attached to any club on Friday, February 2.

Also, deals can be sealed between leagues with different transfer windows. These deals will then be formally completed if/when the buying club’s window is open.

The English Premier League transfer window

For England, the Premier League winter transfer window will be thrown open on Monday, January 1. It will run until Thursday, February 1 at 11p.m. GMT/ 6p.m. ET.

The Spanish La Liga transfer window

The La Liga transfer market will open officially on Tuesday, January 2 and close at 11p.m. GMT/6 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 1.

The Italian Serie A transfer window

In Italy, the Serie A transfer market will be opened officially on Tuesday, January 2. It will then be brought to a close on Thursday, February 1, at 7p.m. GMT/2 p.m. ET.

The German Bundesliga transfer window

The Bundesliga will also witness its market opened on Monday, January 1 while it officially closes at exactly 5p.m. GMT/midday ET on Thursday, February 1.

The French Ligue 1 transfer window

While the Ligue 1 January transfer window formally opens Monday, January 1, it will officially close on Thursday, February 1. Its deadline time is 10p.m. GMT/5 p.m. ET.
