The Federal Government has approved an increase in corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000, effective from July 2024.
This approval was detailed in a statement released Wednesday by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu.
The increase was based on a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
Previously, corps members received a monthly allowance of N33,000, which was introduced after the minimum wage was raised to N30,000 in 2019.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu signed the new Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, setting the new minimum wage at N70,000.

After the new minimum wage was announced, there was widespread speculation about an increase in corps members’ pay.
However, the NYSC management clarified that the Federal Government would determine any increase in allowance.
Embu also mentioned that the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, had previously visited the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to advocate for better welfare for corps members.
The DG expressed gratitude to the government, saying the increase would provide relief for the corps members and boost their morale.
“The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000 with effect from July 2024. This is in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024,” the statement read.
The NYSC Director-General thanked the government for this timely gesture and is hopeful that it will motivate corps members to serve the nation with even more dedication.
