Brentford FC have triggered the option to extend the contract of Nigerian youth defender Benjamin Frederick on a permanent basis.

Frederick came to limelight with his outstanding performances at the last U20 world cup held in Argentina the past year.

Also a part of the bronze winning Flying Eagles team at the CAF U20 championships.

The impressive defensive shifts across these tournaments saw him picked on loan by Brentford in 2023.

Teaming up with the B-squad, his contractual terms had him on loan with an option to buy. Despite primarily featuring with the second teamers, he’s earned senior call-ups with the first team on four occasions this season.

A testament to him quickly settling to life in London and putting in assured performances to the amazement of coaches and team scouts.

Frederick made the switch to the Bees from Kaduna based outfit Simoiben Academy and has penned a four year contract that will keep him at the club till 2028.

The defender will continue with Neil MacFarlane’s B team for the rest of the campaign, as he continues to fight his way for the first team shirt. He’s previously had loan stints with Nassarawa United and ABS FC in Nigeria prior this move.

Having been unfortunately knocked out by South Korea in the world cup quarter-final stage, Frederick has, regardless, been a regular for the Nigerian U20 side. Capped in over ten appearances since February 2023, making his debut aged just 17.

Brentford B head coach Neil MacFarlane on his arrival last year remarked: “Benjamin is a player who has been identified by our recruitment department and he’s a real prospect having impressed for Nigeria in recent tournaments.

“He’s a very tenacious player who likes to defend on the front foot. He’s somebody we will look to develop through our games programme, and we’ll see how his development progresses over the course of his loan. We look forward to welcoming Benjamin to the club.”

The London club have now decided to trigger the buy option, according to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.

With Frank Onyeka’s growth at the club over the years, Brentford fans will be hopeful another player of Nigerian descent can step up to great heights for the club.

The ‘Bees’ currently sit 16th on the English Premier League table with 35 points from 35 matches played.
