Burna Boy: Nigerians react to Grammy Award loss

Nigerians have reacted to the lost of Grammy award by Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy at the just concluded 2023 of the award held on Sunday 5th of February at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, U.S.

The self-acclaimed African giant, Burna Boy was nominated for Best Global Song performance and Best Global Album at the 65th annual Grammy awards, acclaimed to be the world’s most prestigious music honors. 

Burna Boy lost the Best Global Song category to ‘Bayethe’ by Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini & Nomcebo Zikode, and the Best Global album category to ‘Sakura’ by Masa Takumi.

After the announcement, some Nigerians took to their social media pages to react as an act of solidarity as well as confidence that the singer was going to bring the award home next time.

In their mixed reactions, some said he was robbed and cheated while some believe he will make the country proud again as well as congratulating him for his milestone achievement in the music industry so far. 

The two-time Grammy nominee, won the award for Best Global Music Album for his 2020 album ‘Twice as Tall’ at the 63rd Annual Grammys, which took place in Los Angeles, California, on 14 March 2021.

He accepted the award virtually from Lagos, Nigeria, surrounded by his family and fans. 

@lekanforthegods said if Burna Boy won twenty-five [25] Grammys it was a win for Afrobeat and African music as a whole but nothing would change the fact that he can’t be forced into David Adeleke, known as Davido and Ayo Balogun, known as Wizkid conversation. 

Another netizen, @ZeekiHod, stated that if Burna Boy won the Grammy, his fans and Nigerians would have praised him for representing the country, but unfortunately, he did not.

@ZeekiHod added that whether he won or not it will not change the fact that he has made Nigeria and Africa proud. 

Another internet user, @AsiwajuLerry, urged the singer to keep his head up, saying no Grammy today but he would remain the second and only Grammy award-winning Afrobeats artiste after Wizkid. 

Another netizen @KhaleedSZN berated those who were saying the ‘last last’ singer didn’t win this year’s Grammy award, saying they are sick.

@Nuhayhne wrote, “Burna Boy paid for stream farm for common person video just to lose this Grammy award? Warra waste of money.”

Also, @DhavidPr says, “This  one wey Burna Boy no win Grammy, make una dey careful for ein next show sha.”

Similarly, @oluwaseun9 wrote, “Burna Boy lost two Grammys, na people wey go dey front row for Burna’s next concert i pity pass, if he give you mic and you forget lyrics…adieud.” 

@dijism wrote, “Burna Boy lost two Grammys? If you like, go to his next show and be pressing phone.”

@IbkSports said, “It has become too easy for Burna Boy that a people now troll him for not winning FVCKING — Grammys, like say na Headies Award.”

@FaruqBashar says, “Burna  Boy Last Last didn’t lose to this song, it lost to a Western culture where anyone that appease the rainbow nation wins.”

OMOTARA AKANNI-LAWRENCE, wrote “Last last was an anthem sha, they robbed burna boy.”
